In December, London becomes extraordinarily bright, festive, and filled with magical things to see and do.

Just as I shared in my monthly newsletter for subscribers (if you aren’t subscribed yet, you can easily sign up for free on the homepage), here is a practical guide to help you navigate the city during this enchanting time of year.

With these tips, you will be able to organise your days seamlessly, streamline your travel across the city, and make sure you don’t miss any of the main festive highlights.

London in December is packed with events, and it is easy to wander around without hitting the most memorable spots.

December in London is an experience like no other!

During the holiday season, a series of annual events take over the city, turning into absolute must-sees.

Here are my personal favorites to add to your travel itinerary:

  • Christmas at Kew: From mid-November until early January, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew (West London) transform into an enchanted illuminated wonderland at dusk. A 3 km walking trail leads you through twinkling trees, a captivating light show over the Palm House conservatory, and a festive village. Treat yourself to a hot chocolate with marshmallows as you stroll through thousands of glowing lights.
  • Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park: Located in the heart of Hyde Park, this is London’s most famous holiday event: a massive festive amusement park filled with rides, games, food stalls, and seasonal entertainment.
  • Hampton Court Palace: Located just outside central London, the magnificent royal residence of Hampton Court hosts a delightful Christmas market featuring live music and carol singers against a Tudor backdrop.
  • Christmas Carols: As you walk through central London, you will inevitably come across choir singers performing traditional carols. Keep an eye out around Knightsbridge (especially near Harrods) and major church piazzas; it is a truly heartwarming British tradition.

One of the most unmissable December experiences in London is a Christmas Lights tour at dusk. I recommend starting around 5:00 PM when it is fully dark, but the shops are still open and the atmosphere is at its peak.

Central London streets not to miss:

  • Regent Street (famous for its iconic glowing angels)
  • Oxford Street
  • Carnaby Street (always featuring a new creative theme every year)
  • Bond Street
  • Berkeley Square (be sure to check out the breathtaking façade of Annabel’s Club)
  • Covent Garden
  • Elizabeth Street in Belgravia
  • Piccadilly
  • Trafalgar Square
  • Leadenhall Market
  • Knightsbridge
  • Bank of England

🛍️ Festive Window Displays: Creativity & Glamour at Department Stores

London’s Christmas window displays are legendary for their artistry and theatrical set designs. Make sure to visit at least these iconic department stores:

  • Selfridges (Oxford Street)
  • Fortnum & Mason (Piccadilly)
  • Harrods (Knightsbridge)
  • Harvey Nichols (Knightsbridge)
  • Liberty London (Carnaby) – In addition to the exterior, the interior decorations inside this historic Tudor building are utterly spectacular.

⛸️ Ice Rinks: Skating at Iconic Landmarks

Gliding on ice with world-famous historic architecture in the background is a signature London winter activity.

Here are the top ice rinks to visit:

  • Glide at Battersea Power Station: Set directly in front of the restored historic power station along the River Thames, surrounded by lights, food stalls, and an enormous Christmas tree.
  • Somerset House: My absolute personal favorite. The grand neoclassic courtyard hosts a magnificent ice rink illuminated by night, accompanied by holiday music and festive treats.
  • Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink: A picturesque rink set against the dramatic backdrop of Henry VIII’s historic palace.
  • Hyde Park Winter Wonderland: Home to the UK’s largest open-air ice rink set around a traditional bandstand.

🪵 Christmas Markets: Mulled Wine & Seasonal Traditions

London’s holiday markets are frequented as much for their cozy atmosphere as they are for shopping. You will almost always find live music and the aroma of mulled wine (spiced hot wine served exclusively during this season).

Other local winter treats to try include mince pies (small sweet pastries filled with spiced dried fruit) and traditional Christmas pudding.

If you attend a festive dinner in London, you will also notice Christmas crackers on the table: paper tubes pulled by two people that snap open with a pop, revealing a paper crown, a joke, and a small gift.

Top Christmas Markets to Visit:

  • South Bank Centre Winter Market
  • Leicester Square Christmas Market
  • Apple Market in Covent Garden
  • Kingston Christmas Market
  • Winter by the River (London Bridge)
  • Travel Documents (ETA): Starting April 2, 2025, European/Italian citizens are required to obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) prior to departing for the UK. The ETA is an electronic travel permit valid for short stays and can easily be requested online or via the official UK Government app.
  • Getting Around: Contactless credit/debit cards or mobile pay (Apple Pay/Google Pay) are the standard way to pay for the Underground (Tube), buses, and overground trains.
  • Weather & Clothing: London in December can be cold and damp. Pack a waterproof coat, warm layers, an umbrella, and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Christmas Day (December 25): Almost all public transport, shops, museums, and restaurants are closed on Christmas Day. However, public parks remain open, making it a wonderful day for a peaceful stroll through Hyde Park or Regent’s Park.
  • Boxing Day Sales (December 26): Major post-Christmas sales begin on Boxing Day. Expect large crowds along Oxford Street, Regent Street, and major shopping malls.
