🎭 Soho London: A Local Guide to the Heart of the West End
Soho is easily one of the most beloved neighborhoods in London. It is a compact, walkable area, yet it is absolutely bursting with life, energy, and constant creativity.
Here, you will find restaurants of every kind, small independent coffee shops, historic pubs, and bars that stay open late into the night.
The area is also home to countless theatres, artist studios, record shops, bookshops, and unique boutiques; if you are a Harry Potter fan, you definitely should not miss the House of MinaLima on Wardour Street.
While the main avenues are the most famous, the quieter side streets almost always hold the most interesting surprises.
Historic heritage businesses and vibrant new concepts thrive side by side, with traditional architecture standing right next to freshly updated spaces.
Soho also remains a vital cornerstone and point of reference for London’s LGBTQIA+ community, celebrated for its dedicated venues and lively events.
In this guide, I will take you through both the famous highlights and the lesser-known spots that are harder to find in ordinary travel guidebooks.
As always, the goal is to give you a genuine, real-time snapshot of the neighbourhood today so you can truly feel what makes it so unique and original.
Even though it covers a small area, Soho never ceases to offer fresh perspectives, from the newest local spots to iconic places with decades of history behind them.

🏮 Chinatown in Soho: A Journey Through Asian Flavors and Colorful Lanterns
CI would start exploring Soho right from Chinatown.
Chinatown is located in the heart of Soho, just steps away from Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.
It is easy to recognise thanks to its decorated arches and bright illuminated signs: as soon as you step through the main gate, you feel as though you have entered another world.
This is not only because of the variety of Chinese restaurants, bakeries, tea shops, and Asian supermarkets, but also because of the orange Chinese lanterns strung along the streets above passersby, as seen in the photos above.
The atmosphere is always lively, especially in the evening and during festivities such as Chinese New Year in January, when the neighbourhood comes alive with colourful parades and celebrations.
Chinatown is the right place if you want to try traditional dishes, browse unique shops, or simply immerse yourself in a neighbourhood that seems to move to its own rhythm.
Londoners love it for a quick lunch, a special dinner, or simply watching daily life unfold.
The main streets you shouldn’t miss are Gerrard Street, packed with restaurants and shops, and Lisle Street, home to small traditional spots.

🇬🇧 Carnaby Street: Iconic Shopping in the Heart of Swinging London
UAnother must visit spot in Soho is Carnaby London.
Carnaby Street is situated right in the heart of Soho, just a few minutes walk from Oxford Street and Regent Street, two of London’s most famous shopping thoroughfares.
It is one of the city’s best-known pedestrian streets, celebrated for its independent fashion stores, emerging designer boutiques, and established brands.
Here, historic businesses dating back to the 1960s mix with new shops that continuously refresh what is on offer. The atmosphere is vibrant during the day, yet remains compelling in the evening when the shopfront lights create a distinct mood compared to the surrounding streets.
Beyond shopping, you can spot architectural details and murals that celebrate the neighbourhood’s history as the heart of Swinging London.
During festive seasons such as Christmas or New Year, the street fills with light displays and decorations while maintaining its signature character. Carnaby Street is a compact yet captivating area, ideal for anyone looking to combine shopping, dining, and culture in a single stroll.

🍔 Kingly Court: The Secret Courtyard Where to Eat in Soho
CCarnaby Street is also a landmark for anyone looking for food and drinks, with restaurants, cafes, and pubs to suit every taste.
In particular, do not miss the hidden courtyard called Kingly Court (I have placed a pin for you on the interactive map at the end of the article).
Kingly Court is located just off Carnaby Street and is a small pedestrian courtyard filled with restaurants, bars, and cafes. It is perfect for a lunch break or a casual drink in a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the main street.
Here you can find cuisines from all over the world, ranging from traditional dishes to more creative options.
The courtyard attracts both locals and visiting tourists, and it is a convenient spot to stop for a meal without straying far from the centre of Soho.

🏛️ Liberty London: The Historic Tudor Style Department Store
If you find yourself near Carnaby Street, you simply must pop into Liberty London.
The Tudor-style building is already breathtaking from the outside, but inside you will discover a truly captivating mix of fashion, accessories, cosmetics, home decor, and its magnificent, unrivalled fabrics.
It is the perfect spot if you want to discover unique pieces, from established luxury brands to emerging designers.
Even if you do not buy anything, it is well worth browsing through the displays and taking a look at the boutique’s famous decorations and textiles.
The atmosphere is lively yet never overly chaotic, instantly making you realise why Liberty is so iconic.

🎼 Shaftesbury Avenue: Historic Theatres and the Secret Streets of Soho
Shaftesbury Avenue cuts through the heart of Soho and is famous for its theatres.
If you enjoy the theatre, you will find plenty of shows here, ranging from major musicals to smaller, more experimental productions.
The street is always buzzing with energy, especially in the evening, with lights and glowing marquees marking the venues.
Even if you do not plan on attending a show, walking along Shaftesbury Avenue gives you a true sense of Soho’s cultural vitality and how deeply the neighbourhood is tied to the performing arts.
Between one theatre and the next, you will also find bars and restaurants where you can stop before or after a performance.
Strolling down side streets like Dean Street and Greek Street, you will stumble upon small local spots, art galleries, and independent shops that tell the alternative story of Soho.
Meanwhile, Soho Square, a green park right in the centre of the neighbourhood, offers a tranquil corner where you can relax or enjoy a picnic.

🍹 Nightlife in Soho: Historic Pubs, Jazz Clubs, and Authentic Local Spots
To experience the most authentic side of Soho by night, there are several options tucked away off the beaten tourist paths.
Historic pubs like The French House or The Coach & Horses are perfect for a drink in a relaxed atmosphere frequented by locals.
If you love live music, the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club is an absolute must-visit.
Beyond the main auditorium, it recently opened Upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s, the club’s new upper-floor space. It is a more intimate and cosy setting, perfect for sipping a signature cocktail while listening to live jazz in a truly evocative atmosphere.
If you prefer cocktails and clubs, Freedom Bar is small and refined, featuring local DJs and a mix of house, funk, and disco, while Soho Social offers a more vibrant and modern vibe, ideal for dancing and listening to electronic music.
If you are craving a steak, try Macellaio RC Soho.
The idea is to explore without following the crowd: stop wherever you are inspired, ask locals for advice, and try something different from the classic tourist spots.
This way, you can experience an evening in Soho just like a resident, surrounded by music, drinks, and an atmosphere you will not find anywhere else.
